Virtual Reality (VR) is an amazing technology that brings us closer to our virtual dreams. The technology can transport us to outer space, take us underwater, on top of mountains or give us a live experience of a distant tourist destination. VR continues to grow in popularity and yet, people still tend to carry many mis-conceptions about this technology that prevents its proliferation. Here we discuss the most common ones.

Mis-Conceptions About VR Technology

VR and AR are the same: Though both are related and often talked about in one breath, they’re not the same. In Virtual Reality, we experience a virtual world that’s completely computer-generated. In this world, you can play, train and interact with. In Augmented Reality or AR on the other hand, technology enhances our real-life environment with computer-generated graphics.

It’s a newly discovered technology: VR is not a new technology, much like mobile and AI (Artificial intelligence), VR has evolved over a few decades! In fact, it was way back in 1966 that VR’s basic concept was experienced. The prototype named ‘The Sword of Damocles’ possessed all the basic concepts of a VR headset, including 3D visuals and audio to even a custom device for a more realistic feeling.

VR is only meant for gaming purpose: Gaming is one part but not the whole. VR headsets gained popularity because of games and other entertainment features, but now, it is also being used for many different applications. It can be used for training and education to spread knowledge, can help in healthcare to practice different things, etc.

VR is too expensive: This is no longer true. Earlier, VR headsets were expensive, but now things are fast changing, and you can easily find an affordable VR headset.

The emerging technology has a whole lot of potential, just a few years ago, VR was a sci-fi concept. Being a universal technology, it can be applied to almost any type of domain of activity. But it has some disadvantages as well –

Limitations to Watch

Overuse or mis-use of any technology is bad, and VR is no different. Here are a few things to keep in mind while using VR. For one, if you tend to over-use it and become addicted to it, then the technology can lead to health issues. Nausea and eyestrain are common symptoms of prolonged VR usage.

Similarly, you must also understand that VR creates a virtual world for you, which is run by a program. For example, while taking a class, you can ask a question and discuss your problems with your teacher. But with VR you can’t really do that because you’re using a fixed program.

Without a doubt, VR is changing human lives for the better, but like a coin, this technology also has two sides to it. You need to be aware of both in order to use it to its full potential. There are many professional VR headsets available nowadays that lets you put the technology to some serious use.
